Arctic Observing Summit (AOS) 2026

2026-04-14 – The GTN-P Office submitted a short statement to AOS on the new GTN-P Data Platform providing global long-term permafrost observations and also presented a poster focusing on the same topic. The Arctic Observing Summit (AOS) is a biennial summit dedicated to providing “guidance based on the best available knowledge for the design, implementation, coordination and sustained long-term (decades) operation of an international network of Arctic observing systems”. Welcoming our new Young National Correspondents

2026-04-08 – We are pleased to welcome Gregor Luetzenburg and Tom De Ville as our new Young National Correspondents for Denmark and Greenland to the GTN-P community! Gregor is a postdoctoral researcher at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS). Tom is a PhD student based at the Arctic Research Station of the Technical University of Denmark in Sisimiut, West-Greenland. [read more ...]


Call for Applications: GTN-P/IPA grant for ACOP registration

2026-03-26 – The GTN-P together with the IPA are pleased to invite applications for financial support to attend the ACOP 2026 and the GTN-P workshop. Through the GTN-P/IPA Grant, we aim to support motivated Early Career Researchers who have an accepted contribution (oral or poster presentation) at ACOP. GTN-P has officially been accredited as a GCOS Affiliated Network

2026-03-23 – The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has announced that GTN-P has officially been accredited as a GCOS Affiliated Network, recognizing GTN-P's scientific value, data quality, and long-term sustainability. The accreditation highlights GTN-P's vital contribution to tracking permafrost temperature and active layer dynamics, both of which are key indicators of climate change. [read more ...]


GTN-P at the 2026 Arctic Frontiers Conference

2026-03-16 – For the 2026 Arctic Frontiers Conference, policy-makers, scientists, business leaders, and indigenous representatives from nearly 40 countries met in Tromsø, Norway, from 2-5 February 2026. The GTN-P Data Platform was introduced during the science session “Monitoring, Modeling, and Mitigating the Consequences of Arctic Permafrost Change”. [read more ...]

These platforms aim to support researchers, policymakers, and the public in understanding permafrost dynamics and their implications for the global climate system. 2025-12-01 – On 20 November 2025, the GTN-P Office hosted its annual virtual General Assembly, bringing together GTN-P Young National Representatives, National Representatives, the Advisory Board, and the Steering Committee. Publication of the Permafrost Best Practices

2025-05-20 – A new chapter on Measurement of Permafrost has been approved for Volume II of the WMO Guide to Instruments and Methods of Observation, providing the first internationally coordinated guidance for observing permafrost Essential Climate Variables (ECVs). Developed by the GCW Task Team on Permafrost in collaboration with GCOS, GTN-P, and the IPA, the chapter defines standardized methods for measuring permafrost temperature, active layer thickness, and rock glacier velocity. EGU 2025, Vienna, Austria

2025-05-12 – In April and May 2025, the scientific permafrost community gathered in Vienna for the annual European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly. Owing to the conference location, the high-mountain permafrost community — particularly researchers working in the Alps — was strongly represented, offering valuable insights into topics such as mountain stability and related processes. Permafrost DACH conference 2025, Davos, Switzerland

2025-02-10 – The Permafrost DACH Conference is an annual event originally established to serve the German-speaking permafrost research community in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (D-A-CH).
