A new chapter on Measurement of Permafrost has been approved for Volume II of the WMO Guide to Instruments and Methods of Observation, providing the first internationally coordinated guidance for observing permafrost Essential Climate Variables (ECVs). Developed by the GCW Task Team on Permafrost in collaboration with GCOS, GTN-P, and the IPA, the chapter defines standardized methods for measuring permafrost temperature, active layer thickness, and rock glacier velocity.

By harmonizing observation techniques, instrumentation, and data reporting, the guide strengthens global permafrost monitoring and supports critical climate research and WMO flagship initiatives, including the Global Greenhouse Gas Watch.
