The Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost (GTN‑P)

GTN-P – Home for the scientific permafrost community and its data.

The Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost (GTN-P) is the leading international programme for long-term permafrost monitoring. Its mission is to sustain a comprehensive global network that delivers consistent, high-quality, long-term observations of key permafrost indicators (Permafrost Essential Climate Variable quantities). These data support the assessment of the current state of permafrost and its changes over time.

Call for new Young National Correspondents

Each member country of GTN-P is not only represented by a National Correspondent (NC), but also by a Young National Correspondent (YNC). The role of the YNC is to support their country's NC but also to grow into the network. They help collect and upload their countries' data and YNCs are invited to join the yearly GTN-P General Assembly.

Currently the roles of YNC for these countries is vacant:
Austria, Denmark, France, Italy, Japan, Mongolia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway & Svalbard, Romania, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, and USA.

If you are interested in getting more information on the position or becoming your country's YNC, please contact the GTN-P International Office!

GTN-P Data Platform

The GTN-P Data Platform is the central access point for data on Permafrost Temperature (PT) and Active Layer Thickness (ALT).

Permafrost ECV

Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) provide the observational basis for understanding climate change. Permafrost is a key land-cryosphere ECV, defined by GCOS, with core measurements capturing changes in frozen ground that affect climate, ecosystems, and infrastructure. [read more ...]

GTN-P community

The GTN-P governance structure ensures a professional and efficient coordination of the network’s activities. The structure includes a Steering Committee, an Advisory Board, an Office, as well as National and Young National Correspondents. [read more ...]

International Stewardship

GTN-P operates under international stewardship, rooted in the global permafrost community. Its governance and coordination ensure trusted, high-quality observations that underpin climate research, assessments, and international reporting. [read more ...]
